This role will be foundational in how Sword identifies, shapes, and secures public-sector opportunities. As Senior Bid Writer, you will lead the end-to-end tender process, from horizon opportunity qualification through to strategy, writing, submission, and post-bid learning.

Your work will directly support Sword’s partnerships with the NHS and other public and private organisations, helping deliver scalable, evidence-based care to millions of patients.
What you'll be doing:Public Sector Opportunity Identification & Pipeline ManagementOwn the search, monitoring, and identification of relevant UK public-sector opportunities, including NHS tenders, ICS procurements, Trust-level opportunities, and national frameworks.Actively track portals and routes to market.Qualify opportunities in collaboration with commercial, clinical, and leadership stakeholders.Maintain visibility of upcoming opportunities and re-procurements across Sword’s core service lines.
Bid Strategy & LeadershipLead the end-to-end bid process for public-sector tenders, from kick-off to submission.Develop clear, compelling bid strategies aligned to commissioner priorities, evaluation criteria, and procurement rules.Translate complex clinical, technical, and AI-enabled propositions into persuasive, compliant responses.Ensure bids clearly articulate value around outcomes, waiting list reduction, cost-effectiveness, equity, and NHS transformation priorities.
Writing & Content OwnershipTake primary responsibility for writing and editing high-quality tender responses, including: Service delivery models, Clinical pathways, Digital and AI-enabled care approaches, Outcomes, evidence, and evaluation & Implementation, mobilisation, and governanceMaintain and evolve a bid content library, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and continuous improvement.Ensure all submissions are fully compliant, well-structured, and compelling.
Cross-Functional CollaborationWork closely with Clinical, Product, Regulatory, Operations, Finance, and Commercial teams to gather inputs and shape winning submissions.Facilitate bid kick-offs, content reviews, and sign-off processes.Coordinate contributions from multiple stakeholders while maintaining ownership of the final narrative.
Governance, Quality & Continuous ImprovementManage bid timelines, inputs, and internal approvals to ensure on-time, high-quality submissions.Lead post-bid reviews to capture feedback, lessons learned, and areas for improvement.Contribute to improving Sword’s overall public-sector bid capability, processes, and tools.What you need to have: Core RequirementsSignificant experience (typically 5+ years) writing and managing public-sector bids, ideally within the NHS or wider UK healthcare environment.Strong understanding of NHS procurement processes, including Trusts, ICSs, frameworks, and national programmes.Proven ability to lead complex, multi-workstream bids under time pressure.Exceptional written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information into clear, persuasive responses.Experience coordinating cross-functional contributors and managing competing priorities.Strong attention to detail, structure, and compliance.Comfortable working in fast-paced, high-growth environments with evolving priorities.Proficiency with common bid tools, document collaboration platforms, and structured content management.
Bonus PointsExperience bidding for digital health, AI-enabled healthcare, or clinical services.Familiarity with MSK, physiotherapy, mental health, women’s health, prehab/rehab, or occupational health services.Experience working on large-scale ICS or multi-Trust procurements.Understanding of NHS strategic priorities, including the Long Term Plan, elective recovery, and health inequalities.Experience contributing to bid strategy rather than writing alone.
